Thermal louvers are thermal-control elements that have been used in different forms on numerous spacecraft, providing a variable radiative surface by passive means. SENER Aeroespacial offers a wide range of Louvers sizes with adaptable temperature operational setpoint, all of them qualified for flight operation. SENER flight heritage in Rosetta mission has allowed to prove its performances and reliability. On-going space projects are enlarging SENER’s offer, highlighting the design scalability of the product. SENER covers from design up to assembly and validation tests in line with the strict quality space industry standards.

Design

Thermal Louvers are devices with angle-changing blades, which mask a high-emissivity radiator with a low-emissivity surface. The bimetallic spring actuators attached to each blade are calibrated to cause the associated blades to be fully open and fully closed at specified temperatures. Radiator panel equivalent emissivity can be increased/reduced in a factor 7 with a temperature variation of 15K from a set point temperature that can be adjusted on ground. Louver assembly consists of several blades rows, bimetallic actuators and structural frames and covers. All parts are covered with low emissivity coating. Louver reliability is optimised including an actuator for each louver shaft axis. Design options as custom sizing or operational temperature range modification are available.
