SENER was responsible for the conceptual design and validation of the field stabilization unit’s performance for the M5 mirror. This was done by designing and integrating a scale-one demonstrator for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) during its phase B.
M5FU is a fast correcting optical system that provides tip-tilt corrections for the telescope dynamic pointing errors and for the effect of atmospheric tip-tilt and wind disturbances.
- The main parts of the M5FU are:
- M5 is an elliptical mirror measuring 2.9 m x 2.4 m and weighing 360 kg.
- The tip-tilt movement is carried out by three piezo-actuators which can move a weight of up to 200 kg with a range of 450 microns.
