SENER in Poland supports European Rover Challenge31/08/2021 (Poland)
SENER in Poland, a company of SENER Aeroespacial, has become a regular partner of the European Rover Challenge, the largest space event in Europe, combining the international competition of Mars rovers with scientific and technological shows. With more than 50 years of experience in the space industry, SENER Aeroespacial makes a major contribution to this international event.
SENER in Poland, a company of SENER Aeroespacial, will support, for the fifth time the 2021 edition of the European Rover Challenge (ERC), the biggest space and robotics event in Europe. This year’s edition will be held on 10-12 September at the Kielce University of Technology in Poland. For the first time in history, worldwide university teams will compete in two formulas: onsite and remote. In the ONSITE competition, teams will use a rover designed to complete tasks modeled on the challenges faced by robots in actual Martian missions. The Head of the Jury Board for this formula is the SENER’s Poland Project Manager, Marcin Wygachiewicz. As the organizers emphasize, the extensive experience of SENER Aeroespacial engineers in real space missions brings an invaluable transfer of knowledge to the students’ teams of competitors.
Marcin Wygachiewicz has worked in SENER in Poland since 2015, he is responsible, among others, for development of deployment mechanism and hold-down and release mechanism (ATHENA, PROBA-3, SAOCOM) and the clamping mechanism (e.Deorbit).
‘This is the fourth edition of the European Rover Challenge during which I am involved in judging the competition as well as evaluating presentations and documentation provided by the teams. Inspiration for this year’s ERC edition is focused in the fact that combining tasks allows us to get closer to the real space missions. In case of those, there is no time for any significant changes of rover’s configuration, as we know well in SENER Aeroespacial. Furthermore, combining tasks adds the opportunity to assess the strategy planning abilities of teams’ - says Marcin Wygachiewicz.
SENER Aeroespacial has been working closely with the ERC organizers since 2016. The company’s support included many areas of the event such knowledge transfer, lectures, and special awards.
Following the slogan “We inspire a new generation”, the ERC organizers have been bringing space closer to the general public and making them aware of the growing role of modern technologies in everyday life since 2014. ERC is also a meeting place for representatives of the international world of science and business interested in using space and robotic technologies. All these factors are also close to the philosophy of SENER Aeroespacial.
Visitors of ERC will take part in three-day lectures on flights to Mars, the commercialization of the Moon, and the use of space technologies on Earth. Additionally, the world’s largest active Martian volcano will appear on the track of ERC.
The teams’ struggles in the competition and the lectures delivered by experts will also be accessible online. Streaming from all three days of the European Rover Challenge will be available at roverchallenge.eu, the event website on Facebook, and the SpaceTalks channel on YouTube. Admission to the event is free.
